All learner motorcyclists and moped riders must satisfactorily complete CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) before riding on the road.

The CBT course covers 5 elements:

Element A
Introduction
Element B
Practical On Site Training
Element C
Practical On Site Riding
Element D
Safety Talk
Element E
Practical On Road Riding

This course is designed for beginners. The aim is to ensure that riders have the ability to ride to a minimum standard of safety and competence.

Elements A to D will last approximately 4 hours with an instructor / pupil ratio of no more than 1 to 4. Element E will be at least two hours in full radio contact with your instructor with a ratio of no more than 1 to 2.

When you’ve successfully completed all 5 elements you’ll be issued with a certificate of completion of training (DL 196). The certificate is valid for two years.

You can now ride on the road on a learner legal motorcycle.

You can also now apply for the DSA motorcycle theory test and, if you pass that, go on to take the practical standard test or the DAS course.

Legal Requirements

In element A your trainer will check that you have all the legal requirements such as a driving licence and a roadworthy bike with road tax and MOT (if bike is over 3 years old). If you are hiring a bike from the training centre then all you need is a licence.

Current law allows a 16 year old to ride up to a 50cc.

A 17 year old can ride up to a 125cc machine with L – plates once a CBT course has been completed.

If you are using your own bike you must also have insurance and L plates front and rear.

Both 50cc & 125cc machines are available to hire by trainees.

Essential clothing requirements

1 Helmet – type A (blue kitemark) or Type B (green kitemark) or new EU standard
2 British Standards or EU approved visor.
3 Tough jacket
4 Tough trousers
5 Good pair of sturdy over the ankle boots.
6 Winter clothing for winter, summer clothing for summer.
7 Remember tough, warm, waterproof, roomy and bright.
